MMK: COUNTERING THE PANDEMIC

Labour protection during the pandemic
Every year, World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated on 28 April. This year, the main focus is on the prevention of infectious disease outbreaks in the workplace, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. The International Labour Organisation emphasises the importance of adopting adequate measures to protect labour in the workplace, which play a decisive role in containing the spread of the disease.
The technical inspection team of MMK’s trade union has fundamentally changed its work style since the introduction of the “state of heightened readiness” order. Closely following the coronavirus prevention measures introduced by the employer into the workplace and promptly informing employees about them became their first priority. Not one new measure, introduced in the workplace at MMK, escapes the notice of the trade union’s specialists: no matter if it’s the use of disinfectants on plant’s territory, the issuing of PPE to employees, or the measuring of temperature in passageways and so on.
In addition, the technical inspectors continue to pay attention to issues such as the safety of public transport which is used to bring employees to work, and the continued operation of canteens and catering facilities at the plant. Nowadays, the community workers conduct snap inspections to this effect almost daily.
The introduction of the state of heightened readiness and change in the technical inspectors’ work style was reflected in the labour protection events, previously planned by the trade union. None of the events were cancelled, but merely rescheduled, including comprehensive unit inspections. All in all, over the course of 2019 the trade union's technical inspectors conducted 102 unit inspections, during which they uncovered 231 violations.
In addition, the trade union’s responsibility for the upholding of safe working conditions and labour protection is exercised by 790 labour protection representatives. In 2019, the labour protection representatives found over 35 thousand violations, an absolute majority of which were corrected without delay.
